Five for Friday

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs for Five for Friday

{1} Environmental Print

After looking at a few examples of environmental print, my kinders discovered that we could read already!  The next day they brought in their own examples and shared (read) them.  SO FUN!

...and then a game!

We played this spin and graph game to continue the fun of reading environmental print. The game is free from the link below:

I did modify a couple of pictures to be ones that were most familiar in our area.   I also discovered that Wikipedia has logos for just about everything that you can easily drag to your desktop.  SUPER FUN!  Thank you Mrs. Lirette!!!

{2} For all of you kindergarten teachers out there who are just starting after Labor Day, I'll be thinking about you:)

{3} Stick Together Like Glue

I really wanted to get a jump on teaching some neatness techniques for gluing.  I found these great songs with cute graphics here for free.

After we sang the songs I posted the pages on the wall near the art and writing center for a reminder to my kinders:). We also did this gluing practice printable which is also part of the printable set. Thank you Mrs. Miner!!!

Room 10

So, this is what room 10 looked like exactly one year ago after moving in...
I was lucky enough to inherit this beautiful (although you can't see it here:)) room with a wall of windows and high ceilings from my best teaching buddy when she retired.  My school is 50 years old and recently remodeled.   We have that bright airy feeling that I did not have in the new pre-fab constructed building that I was previously in.

... and this is what I walked into this year...
Same room, but SO much better, right?  As I work, work, work I keep telling myself that I am way ahead of where I was a year ago.  But there is always SO much to do, isn't there?

Africa This Month!

My kinders loved learning about African animals this month.  They all chose an animal to "research" at home, report on and do a project on.  In class we did art projects such as these precious giraffes done with fine point black markers and a little brown paint.

No Sew Paper Towel Quilt Tutorial

Materials:  3 buckets or other containers; 3 bottles or packages of RIT dye (each of a different color) prepared as directed on the package; 2 rolls of decent quality paper towels; rubber or latex gloves; paint smocks

This is best done in very small groups (3-5).  Hopefully you have a wonderful parent volunteer like I did:) Give each student a square of paper towel to fold.  They can fold it up anyway they like, until it can't be folded any smaller. Most will end up with a tight little square or triangle. Have students put on gloves and smocks.  Have them choose 2 colors and dip 2 different corners of their folded paper towel into each color quickly.  If they hold the paper towel in too long, colors get muddy.  It's okay to have some white left.  Unfold and hang outside to dry.  Repeat for a large quilt.  The quilt above is about 120 pieces.  The students did 4 or 5 pieces each.

To assemble the dry pieces, simply run a line of Elmer's glue along the edges and overlap slightly.  Use enough glue so that it soaks through both plies when slightly compressed.  That's it...no cutting, no sewing!!!  Your students will ooooo and aaahhh over the results.  We made ours into sort of a tent, which my kinders love to sit under and look up at.
